Arkworks Gallery
Welcome to our virtual gallery, featuring the  woodcarvings, and the maritime-theme oil paintings of Jonathan Graves.  As the name Arkworks implies, our focus is about Arks.  All manner of Arks, each one individually designed and hand-carved by the artist.  Graves’ Arks are world-famous, and have been featured in numerous international magazines including Country Living, Wildlife Art, Country Home, Sunset, Early American Life, and have even graced the cover of the Eddie Bauer Christmas catalog.  For more information and photos of Arks, click on the Northwest
Ark photo below.
Today, artist Jonathan Graves makes
his home on Grand Manan Island, located at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy.  Here his maritime surroundings serve as inspiration for his carvings and paintings. What began many years ago as a hobby took off, after his first Ark was published on the cover of Early American Life magazine in December 1989.  Over the years he has created dozens of different Ark designs, many of which are pictured here and they have been represented by fine art galleries throughout the U.S. & Canada, including ones in Santa Fe, NM; Palm Beach, FL; Carmel, CA; and Greenwich CT.  His work has also been featured by the Canadian Craft Museum in downtown Vancouver, B.C.
When he is not carving, Jonathan Graves pursues other interests as a licensed Realtor, specializing in waterfront & waterview properties on Grand Manan Island.  To see his listings, click on: www.coldwellbankerclassic.com or  www.grandmananislandrealestate.com

In addition to Arks, Graves’ other favourite carving subject is birds -- both primitive decoy-types, as seen below, and realistic bird carvings, as seen on the right. Regardless of style, most depict the migratory shore birds who frequent Grand Manan and the eastern North American flyway. For more examples of either primitive, or realistic birds, click on the appropriate picture.  Birders will be interested to learn that Grand Manan Island is home to a museum that houses the extensive Allen Moses stuffed bird collection which is seasonally open to the public, and which is a valuable reference resource.

A final category of carvings involves the marine mammals and fishes and related subjects like the Moby Dick carving featured above.  To see more such carvings, click on the photo above.
